9/2/2026 - Half Day of School

Hello Wyandotte Public Schools Community,

I am writing to inform you that tomorrow, Wednesday, September 2nd, will be a half day for all students.

With the afternoon heat index projected to exceed 100°F in the afternoon and high overnight temperatures preventing our buildings from fully cooling, this adjustment is necessary for the health and safety of our students and staff. Because most of our classrooms lack air conditioning, conditions on upper floors become especially severe during extreme heat.

I recognize that sudden schedule changes create childcare challenges for families, and I do not make this decision lightly. While starting the school year after Labor Day might have avoided this, extreme weather cannot be predicted when setting the calendar. In these conditions, safety must be our priority.

I also want to address recent social media discussions regarding district funding, millages, and air conditioning:

  • Scope & Cost: We recently assessed the entire district for central air conditioning. Because our facilities rely on boiler heat, retrofitting them with the necessary ductwork and electrical capacity will cost over $13 million.

  • Funding: A project of this scale requires a voter-approved bond proposal, which demands careful, long-term planning. Operating millage dollars are legally designated to maintain day-to-day district functions, and fundraising or temporary window units cannot safely or sustainably cool spaces of this size.

While there is no quick fix, we are committed to planning a practical, long-term solution.

Coaches and activity leaders will communicate directly regarding after-school activities, as decisions will depend on the specific conditions for each program.
